Some of the best waves in the world can be found at Hu'u, on the south
coast. The waves which offer long tube rides break off outlying reefs
at Periscopes, Nangas, Lakey Peak, Pipeline, Cobblestones and Nangadoros.
International surfing competitions hosting teams from all over the
world have been conducted here.
The beach has beautiful white sand with small inlets that are fine

- Mount Tambora [DD3]
Mount Tambora which is noted as being the centre of the largest eruption
in recorded history, dominates the northern peninsula of Sumbawa.
It is 2,851 m high, heavily wooded and surrounded by a thick belt
of rain forest - a strange contrast to the aridity of the remainder
of the peninsula.
Climbs up to the monstrous Tambora crater begin from and can be arranged
at the small village of Pancasila located at the base of the mountain,
s short distance from Calabai.
The Tambora trek necessitates camping two nights in a rain forest
and one night close to the summit. While the climbs are never overly
steep or risky, climbers have to prepare for the minor discomforts
of the rain forest walk that often includes leeches.

- Satonda Island [DA1]
Just of the north coast of Sumbawa lays pristine Satonda Island. Also
called Mount Satonda, it is 289 m about sea level and has an area
of 4.8 sq km. It has a salt water crater lake in the middle of the
island. It is an oval lake 200 m by 150 m. The depth of the lake water
is 70 m.
Before the eruption Mount Tambora in 1816, the water in the lake was
fresh, but because of the eruption there was an extremely high tide
which sent salt water into the island. The water in the lake became
salty and life began in the lake. Fish live in the lake but the fish
can only grow to a length of 5 cm.
Surrounding Satonda is a coral reef of exceptional condition with
a wide range of fish. Because of this, it is not unusual to see boats
bringing divers from as far away as Jakarta and Bali to enjoy its
beauty in un-crowded conditions. This is a real magic of Satonda -
it is the way off the beaten track in a truly wonderful location lying
in a mostly calm, blue sea within sight of a towering volcano
