PLACES OF INTEREST

 

 

  • Ai' Beling Waterfall [SI8]
    The waterfall is located in the very densely forested area of the Sultan;s hunting area just 36 km south via Semamung from Sumbawa Besar. Ai' Beling waterfall is 6 km from Brang Rea on a road that may need a guide. It is 50 m high.

 

 

  • Bungin Island [SC5]
    Located near Alas in north-west Sumbawa, Bungin Island is the most densely populated island in the world, it is built from coral and sand and there is almost no vacant land. The island inhabited by the Bajo people. Its area is becoming larger as the inhabitants extend the island as the population increases. Originally established about 190 years ago by fisherman from Sulawesi, the houses are built on stilts above low-lying coral atolls; People fetch firewood and bury their dead on neighboring Panjang Island.

 

 

  • Batu Tereng [SJ8]
    Liang Petang cave is located in the village of Batu Tereng 29 km south of Sumbawa Besar. With its stalagmites and stalactites, it is a fascinating natural phenomenon, some resembles a weaving loom. The other cave in the area is the home for hundred of fruit bats. Also in this area of Ai Renung are sarcophagi, stone graves built 2000 years ago.
 
  • Batu Bulan Dam [SI7]
    Batu Bulan Dam Irrigation Project, with total capacity of 54 million m3, is located in Sumbawa Regency. It supplies water to an irrigation area of 5576 ha. The Project started in 1998 with aid from Japan, it was opened in 2003. The Project contributes to the income generation of the farmers and development of the local community. It has become a popular local tourist sport and has plans outlined for major tourism activities, including sailing, fishing, restaurants and cultural events.
 
  • Batu Gong Beach [SD4]
    A beautiful beach with sloping shore and white sand, good for swimming, 14 km from Sumbawa Besar. Just across the road from the beach there are caves of archeological interest. Hindu fleeing from the "invasion" of Islam some 400 hundred years ago, hid there. The place is still used by Hindu worshippers today. At the times of particular sea tides and prevailing winds, the sound of "gong" can be heard in the caves.
 
  • Empang [SQ9]
    Eastern Sumbawa Regency has interesting farmlands, hills and aquaculture. Beaches with good waves for surfing exist on the southern coast.
 
  • Lunyuk Beach [SF13]
    The beach received ocean swells, has gray / black sand and has a habitat for ridgeback turtle, which is protected and also the green and scale turtles. In addition, the beach has seaweed, red and yellow algae, lobster, pearl and Lola shell.

  • Moyo Island [SJ4] - It is located northward of Sumbawa, in front of the Saleh strait, with an area of 30,000 hectares. Moyo Island has both land and marine tourist object. Its tropical forest is a home for flocks of deer, Bali banten cattle, boar, fruit bats, snake and lizards, and the protected 'gosong bird' (megapodius).
    There are also two waterfalls. Its marine tourism provides a beautiful underwater panoramic view for snorkeling and scuba diving, even from the wharf thousands of small can be seen. Lady Diana from England and Prince William from the Netherlands had once visited Moyo Island for their holidays
 
  • Semongkat [SG7]
    Located in Batu Lereng south of Sumbawa Besar, this recreation area is a perfect place to escape the heat. Situated on the slopes of a hill 450 m above sea level, the breeze is refreshing while viewing the beauty of the area. Once the bathing spot of the Sultan,
    The facilities that are available there, among others are the (old) swimming pool fed by a mountain river and shelter.

  • Sultan's Palace (Dalam Loka) [SJ6]
    The old Sultan's Palace is not far from Wisma Praja in the heart of the town. It is also known as Dalam Loka or Istana Tua. It is made of wood and is supported by 99 wooden columns. It was built in 1885 as the Palace of Sultan Jalaludin III who reigned from 1883-1931.
    Restored in the 1980s, the Palace stands strongly, as proof of the grandeur of the past. Now it is used as a museum and of cultural activities. It is interesting for its beauty and the uniqueness of the architecture, as it was built without nails.
 
  • Tepal [SF7]
    About is 60 km from Sumbawa besar, Tepal is traditional village, very interesting because old traditional of the forebears retained Sumbawa culture. It is on the further on from Semongkat and the village Batu Dulang.
    The final travel from Batu Dulang to Tepal is done on horseback. It is located on a hill above a river. It is possible to stay overnight there with the permission of Kepala Desa; bring special food if required and give some money or gift to the village.
 
  • Talwa Village [SJ6]
    Known as the village for blacksmiths, so many blacksmiths are in that village it gets the nickname "The Solingen of Sumbawa".
    It lies at the district of Moyo Hulu approximately 15 km to the south of Sumbawa Besar. The ancestor of the people there were blacksmiths from all parts of Sumbawa, pooled there especially to make traditional weapon like spears, chopping knives, etc to be used in the fights against the Dutch colonialism. The skill that is still maintained and developed into making people daily tools like hoes, spades, axes, plough shares and so on.
 
  • Utan - Batu Gong [SD4]
    Before Hinduism spread over Bali, Sumbawa was one Hindu's kingdom. Gong stones located at Orong Bawa village, nearby Utan are evidence of the influence of Hinduism.
 
  • Yellow House - Bala Kuning [SJ6]
    This was the house of the late Sultan Muhammad Kaharudin III and his family after his abdication. Treasures of the past can be found here, including the ceremonial Dagger (Keris), Crown, Spear the Sultan clothes and other object. Many of the relics are made of gold and have been exhibited in foreign countries.
